Although Indiana has a long tradition with some great land-based casinos and a long history with gambling, it has not legalized online casinos. There have been discussions of legalizingonline casinos, but it has not yet been approved by the senate.
Indiana does allow online sportsbooks, so it is hoped that online casinos will be legalized in the near future as well. At the time of writing, there is no pending legislation forlegalizing online casinos.
But, you can still register with a legal online casino while you're in Illinois. That means you can get the casino's bonus offers or deposit, and then play whenever you're in stateswhere it's legal (even in a layover at the airport). (Do be aware of the casino bonus's expiry date, though.)
Land-based Casinos in Indiana
Indiana has just one land-based casino. You'll find nearly a dozen riverboat casinos around Lake Michigan. And there are two racinos associated with the state's horse tracks.
Indiana has one Native American casino, Four Winds Casino South Bend. It opened in early 2018.

Types of Casinos in Indiana
There are three types of Indiana casinos:
- riverboat casinos
- pari-mutuel casinos
- one Native American casino
There is now some fluidity between these types, however. The racetracks have slots machines, and the riverboats now have land-based facilities as well.
Riverboat Casinos in Indiana
In June 1993 Indiana became the sixth state to legalize riverboat gambling. All of the riverboat casinos in Indiana offer dockside gambling and, unless otherwise noted, are open 24 hours.
Pari-Mutuel Casinos in Indiana
In April 2007, the Indiana state legislature authorized the state’s two horse tracks (Hoosier Park and Indiana Grand) to have up to 2,000 electronic gaming machines.
There are no casinos in Indianapolis, but the two racetrack casinos are the closest casinos to Indianapolis. Indiana Grand Racing & Casino is about 30 miles southeast and Hoosier ParkRacing & Casino is about 45 miles northeast.
Both casinos are open 24 hours.
Native American Casinos in Indiana
Indiana has one Indian casino (Four Winds Casino South Bend) which opened in early 2018.
Four Winds Casino South Bend
This casino only offers Class II gambling which consists of electronic gaming machines which look like slot machines, but are actually games of bingo and the spinning video reels are for“entertainment purposes only.'
They have over 1,400 games.
None of the games are called slots, but many use the term jackpot. For example:
- Casablanca
- Penn & Teller
- Willie Nelson
- Monopoly
- Million Degrees
- Wheel of Fortune Big Money
Slot Payback in Indiana
The payback percentages on electronic gaming machines at all Indiana casinos (riverboats and pari-mutuels) are released as a matter of public record. Just click here to see a list of slot machine payback statistics for all Indiana casinos.
NOTE: If you happen to win a jackpot of $1,200 or more in Indiana, the casino will withhold 3.4% of your winnings for the Indiana Department of Revenue. You may, however, be able to get some ofthat money refunded by filing a state income tax return. The $1,200 threshold also applies to any cash prizes won in casino drawings or tournaments.
History of Gambling in Indiana
Indiana has had a slow growth toward allowing more and more land-based casinos in the state. This began in the late 1980s with the establishment of the state lottery.
The legalization of sports betting in 2019 gives some hope for legal online casinos in the state. There has been talk at the level of the state legislature of expanding into online casinos, butthat would not be a reality before 2021.
