What Is Bet Back

“Wait, why does this NFL team have a -235 next to its name? What’s with New England Patriots (-15) vs. Miami Dolphins (+15)? Help! HEEEELPPPP!”

It allows punters to sell bets instead of the usual odds in backing a bet. Lay Betting is an option on exchanges where betters play the role of a bookmaker, but offers odds to sell a bet instead of the odds to back a bet. Laying a bet offers a method of betting against the odds of an outcome, instead of for it. It is also known as a 'back bet'. This is a number backed with two numbers on either side of it in a five-piece bet. According to Wikipedia: For example, “0 and the Neighbors” is a five- piece bet with one piece straight-up on 3, 26, 0, 32 and 15. Neighbors bets are often put on in combinations.

If that sounds like you, we’re here to assist you. If you’ve stared at a board at a sportsbook or just seen spreads and moneylines on the Internet and been utterly confused, don’t worry. It’s not just you. Those numbers can be confounding.

But hopefully, once you’re done reading this, you’ll completely understand how they work. As you prepare to dive into the world of sports betting, here’s a breakdown of how the lines work, starting with …

Spreads

  • Here is the TV Schedule to help you find your favorite BET shows.
  • The two-runner market. You'll get a two-runner market in such events as a tennis match, or in sports such as darts (in knockout tournaments) or snooker. So basically, any event between two runners.

It would be really easy to bet on a game if you could put money on a heavy favorite to win.

That’s where point spreads come in. Let’s look at an example:

Philadelphia Eagles (-4.5)

New York Giants (+4.5)

In this case, you can bet on either two outcomes: you can put money on the Eagles to win the game by 4.5 points OR MORE, which makes them the favorites. Or you can bet that the Giants will either win or lose by LESS THAN 4.5 points. They’re the underdogs.

Now, sometimes the spread “moves” during the days leading up to the game. Perhaps the Eagles’ spread ends up being -3.5 (in which they must win by 3.5 points or more to give you a victory in your bet). Your bet all depends on whichever spread you bet on, whether it was when the Eagles were favored by 4.5 or 3.5 points.

If you ever see “PK” or “pick” next to a team, it means there’s no spread and you can bet on who will win, no matter what the score is.

Moneylines

Let’s take that same example above but use moneylines:

Philadelphia Eagles (-200)

New York Giants (+150)

The team with a minus symbol is the favorite, and the number is how much money you would need to bet to win $100. In this case, you would have to bet $200 on the Eagles in order to win an additional $100.

The Giants are the underdogs. If they’re +150, that means you could bet $100 to win $150.

Backupbet

Note that you can bet any amount you want, but those numbers are always calculated and posted the same way, either in how much money you would need to wager to win $100 or how much money you could win by wagering $100.

Odds

If you’re betting on something like the team who will win the Super Bowl in the future, you might see it look like this:

New England Patriots — 3/1

Baltimore Ravens — 5/1

Kansas City Chiefs — 8/1

If you were betting on the Patriots and their 3/1 odds, you would win $3 for every $1 you spend. So if you bet $50 on the Pats and they ended up winning the Super Bowl, you’d win $150 (plus your original wager) back.

Good luck!

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said that he would 'bet my house' that Republicans win the back majority in the House in 2022.

Backupbet

During an appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), McCarthy was asked by American Conservative Union Chair Matt Schlapp about what the minority leader thought the likelihood is of Republicans taking back the lower chamber in the next midterm cycle.

'We're going to get the majority back. We're five seats away,' McCarthy exclaimed. 'I would bet my house' on it, he continued.

Democrats won back control of the House in the so-called 'blue wave' in the 2018 midterms, and won the House, Senate and White House in the 2020 elections.

However, Republicans exceeded expectations in the last election cycle when they were projected to lose 15 members, flipping several seats in the House and winning seats eyed by Democrats in the Senate.

Democrats currently only hold five seats over Republicans in the House, the narrowest House majority in modern history, and have a razor-thin advantage in a 50-50 Senate, with Vice President Harris serving as the tie-breaking vote.

'My personal house, don't tell my wife, but I would bet it' McCarthy joked. 'This is the smallest majority the Democrats have had in 100 years.'

McCarthy also credited former President Donald Trump with Republicans gaining seats in the House, stating his campaigning is what helped voters get out to vote on election day.

What Is A Back Up Bet

'This is the first time since 1994 that no incumbent Republican lost. We beat 15 Democrats. You know who the 15 Democrats lost to? Conservative women and conservative minorities,' McCarthy said.

The comments from McCarthy come as the GOP has faced intra-party divisions following Trump's tenure in the White House. The Capitol riots that shook Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6 have further driven a wedge between GOP House leadership on whether to stick by the former president, with No. 3 Republican Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wy.) voting to impeach Trump earlier this year.

Cheney also broke with McCarthy while standing just feet away from him during a press conference where the two addressed whether or not Trump should address CPAC. McCarthy quickly stated that Trump 'should' be present at the annual event.

Cheney, however, stated: 'That's up to CPAC.'

'I've been clear about my views about President Trump and the extent to which, following Jan. 6, I don't think he should be playing a role in the future of party,' she continued.

The press briefing concluded abruptly after McCarthy said, 'On that high note, thank you very much.'
